PHILADELPHIA –Saint Joseph’s men’s track and field sophomore Matthew Scarpill has been voted onto the 2019 Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area Men’s Track and Field Team.
In order to be eligible for Academic All-Area accolades, a student-athlete must be in at least his second year at his institution and maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 or better. Voting is conducted among the sports information offices of 30 schools in the Philadelphia metropolitan area.
Scarpill was tabbed for the Atlantic 10 Outdoor Track and Field All-Academic Team and turned in a personal best in the 3000m steeplechase at the Atlantic 10 Outdoor Championships; he would go on to place in the top 25 at the ECAC Championships with another personal best in the 1500m. Scarpill claimed the title in the steeplechase at Lehigh, and also led off the Hawks’ third-place 4x1500m relay squad at the Colonial Relays.
During the indoor portion of the campaign, Scarpill placed 15th in the 3000m at the Atlantic 10 Indoor Championships after placing ninth in the event at the Villanova Invitational. He ran his personal best in the mile to place fourth at the Fastrack Last Chance meet; he would go on to earn a top-15 finish at the Penn State National Invitational and qualified for the IC4A Indoor Championships as well.
Scarpill, who hails from Warrington, Pennsylvania, is one of 10 honorees on this year’s squad. Haverford's Greg Morgan was named the Academic All-Area Performer of the Year.
