Wrestling Comes in at Second in MAC Preseason Rankings, Eight Individuals Ranked As Well

CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Mid-American Conference (MAC) announced its 2019 -2020 preseason wrestling rankings on Wednesday morning, and the Old Dominion wrestling team was picked to finish second in the conference behind reigning MAC Champion Missouri. Eight Monarchs were also featured in the rankings, as Michael McGee, Sa’Derian Perry, Kevin Budock, Larry Early, Shane Jones, Antonio Agee, Tim Young and Will Hilliard were all ranked in their respective weight classes. 

ODU earned 32.0 points in the preseason voting, nine points behind first place Missouri, who checked in with 41.0 points. Lock Haven rounds out the top-three, coming in with 24.0 points. Last season, the wrestling Monarchs posted a 5-2 record against conference opponents and a 9-7 overall record. ODU returns three NCAA Qualifiers in McGee, Perry and Early. 

McGee (125) and Early (157) are both ranked atop of their weight classes for the conference. McGee went a perfect 16-0 in duals last season and is the reigning MAC Champion in the 125-pound class after defeating Central Michigan’s Drew Hildebrandt in a 5-2 win by decision. Hildebrandt also returns this year to CMU and is ranked second in the preseason poll behind McGee. 

Early earned All-American status after placing eighth at the NCAA Championships in the 157-pound weight class last year in Pittsburgh. At the MAC Championships, Early finished as the conference runner-up.  

Three other Monarchs are also ranked in the top-three in their weight class, as Jones was tabbed second at 165 pounds, while Perry and Budock were picked third at 141 pounds and 149 pounds, respectively. Jones placed fifth at last season’s MAC Championships after posting a 19-18 overall record. Perry was nationally ranked all season and also took fifth at the MAC Championships, while Budock finished as the runner-up in his weight class at the conference finals. 

Agee comes in at fourth in the conference at 184 pounds after posting a 16-9 record last season. Young (197) checks in at fifth in his weight class after a season that saw him go 9-5 in duals and defeating top-seeded Wyatt Koelling to advance to the MAC Finals. 

Hilliard rounds out the ranked Monarchs, as he was picked fifth in the conference in the 285-pound class. Hilliard is coming off a season where he went 16-6 and took seventh at the conference championships.

The Old Dominion wrestling season begins on Sunday, November 3, when the teams goes down to Charleston, South Carolina to compete in the Battle at the Citadel.
