Maryland Edges Lady Monarchs 5-4 In Double Overtime

COLLEGE PARK, MD. (Sept. 3) - In a battle between the last two NCAA Field Hockey National Champions, Rachel Hiskins' goal in the second sudden death overtime period lifted Maryland to a 5-4 victory over the Lady Monarchs of Old Dominion Sept. 3. Maryland, the defending National Champions are now 3-0, while ODU, Champions in 1998 drops to 2-1.

With Maryland leading, 4-2, All-American Marina DiGiacomo (Mendoza, Argentina) went to work. She scored on an assist form Adrienne Yoder (Coopersburg, Pa.) and Marjolijn van der Sommen (Leiden, Netherlands). Then with 37 seconds remaining in regulation DiGiacomo tied the match.

Neither team scored in the first overtime. Hiskins hit the game winner with 13:55 left in the second sudden death period.

The Lady Monarchs went out to a 2-0 lead as DiGiacomo scored with 26:14 left in the first half on assists from Yoder and van der Sommen. Freshman Angie Loy from Loysville, Pa. made it 2-0 with 16:40 left in the first half. Maryland came back as Rachel Hiskins scored with 9:03 left, then Hiskins tied the match on an assist from Caroline Walter with 6:17 left in the half.

In the second period, Angie Klingerman put the Terps up 3-2 on an assist from Walter. Maryland's fourth goal came with 24:31 left in regulation by Carla Tagliente. Old Dominion returns to action at home next Saturday afternoon when they host Duke at 1 p.m.
