Lady Monarchs Edge Penn State, 4-3, To Open Season

University Park, Pa. (Aug. 26) - The Old Dominion field hockey team opened the 2000 season with a 4-3 victory over Penn State Aug. 26 in University Park. The Lady Monarchs begin the season at 1-0 overall while the Lady Lions fall to 0-1 overall.
Old Dominion jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead before Penn State cut into the lead with two goals of its own. At halftime, the Lady Monarchs were up 4-2, scoring all of their goals in the first 35 minutes and holding off a Penn State attack.
Sophomore forward Marjolijn van der Sommen (Leiden, Netherlands) led the way with two goals and an assist while senior Marina DiGiacomo (Mendoza, Argentina) collected a goal and two assists. DiGiacomo opened the scoring surge with the game's first goal and assist. Sophomore goaltender Marybeth Freeman (Holland, Pa.) collected four second-half saves to preserve the win.
Old Dominion will take on New Hamphshire Sunday afternoon at Penn State. Next weekend, the Lady Monarchs will travel to defending national champion Maryland on Sunday. They will open their home schedule with a September 9 tilt against Duke.
