Sooners Advance to Ninth Straight Supers
NORMAN – For the ninth straight season and 12th time overall, Oklahoma softball will compete the NCAA Super Regionals.
The Sooners defeated Missouri 7-0 in the NCAA Norman Regional on Sunday to clinch their spot in Supers. OU outscored opponents 24-0 in the regional, marking the first time since 2010 OU did not allow a run in regional play.
“The way this happened this weekend – with three shutouts, with a defense that was on point, offense coming in clutch – it was everything we wished for and hoped for,” OU head coach Patty Gasso said. “I don’t know that it could have been that much better than it was.”
Senior lefty duo Paige Parker and Paige Lowary combined for the Sooners' 27th shutout of the season on Sunday. Parker improved to 28-2 on the year, scattering three hits while registering one strikeout over 4.1 frames. Lowary closed the final 2.2 innings, allowing two hits and striking out one batter.
At the plate, OU was led by junior Shay Knighten, who finished 3-for-3 with one run scored, two RBIs and a walk. Nicole Pendley also drove in multiple runs in the contest thanks to a two-run home run.
The Sooners took the lead in the top of the first when a throwing error allowed Jocelyn Alo and Knighten to reach home.
Oklahoma tacked on three more in the fourth. Kelsey Arnold hit a sacrifice fly that brought Nicole Mendes home, and the next three Sooners loaded the bases. Knighten delivered with a two-RBI single to right field.
Pendley extended the lead with a seventh-inning home run, her second blast of the weekend and 15th of the year.
No. 4 seed Oklahoma will host No. 13 seed Arkansas next weekend at Marita Hynes Field, with the full weekend schedule to be determined. The winner of the Super Regional will advance to the Women’s College World Series in Oklahoma City.
A limited number of all-session general admission tickets for the 2018 NCAA Softball Norman Super Regional go on sale Monday at 10 a.m. online and over the phone at (405) 325-2424 or (800) 456-GoOU.
All-session general admission tickets are $20 and $15 for youth (ages 2-18) and seniors (ages 55+). Each day of the regional is considered one session and a session ticket is good for all games in one day. OU students will have to purchase an OU student ticket for this event as it is an NCAA sponsored tournament.
Single-session tickets, if availability remains, will go on sale the first day of the tournament at the Oklahoma Softball Complex box office. Single session tickets are $10.
