ORLANDO, Fla. – The Oklahoma baseball team suffered a 5-4 loss in 14 innings to open the series Friday night at UCF in front of 1,173 fans at John Euliano Park. The Sooners fell to 31-19 overall, while UCF improved to 33-17.
The Knights scored two runs in the bottom of the 14th to rally past the Sooners. After a sacrifice fly by UCF right fielder Max Wood tied the game at 4-4, second baseman Matthew Mika delivered a RBI single to plate the winning run for the Knights.
The Sooners broke a 3-3 tie in the top of 14th with a two-out solo home run from freshman first baseman Cade Cavalli. The home run marked the freshman’s fourth of the season and first since April 21 at Texas Tech.
Steele Walker and Kyler Murray led the Sooners at the plate with 2-for-5 performances. Walker doubled and scored two runs, while Murray’s fifth-inning double gave OU a 3-2 lead.
Cade Harris was also 2-for-5 with a pair of walks. Brylie Ware extended his hitting streak to 10 games with a single in the 14th inning.
Senior right-hander Devon Perez (4-3) took the loss for the Sooners in relief, allowing the go-ahead run to reach on a single in the 14th. OU starting pitcher Jake Irvin picked up a no-decision, allowing three runs on eight hits with six strikeouts.
OU used seven pitchers in the game, recording a season-high 19 strikeouts. Kyle Terry, Connor Berry and Austin Hansen combined to throw 5.1 innings of scoreless relief.
UCF reliever JJ Montgomery earned the win for the Knights, allowing four hits and one earned run, while striking out five. Montgomery combined with Thad Ward to limit the Sooners to just four hits and one run over nine innings of relief work for the Knights.
Due to forecasted rain, first pitch for Saturday’s game has been moved up to 4 p.m. CT.
