TULSA, Okla. – The Oklahoma men’s golf team entered the year with an opportunity to win three postseason championships in its home state. The Sooners accomplished one of those goals on Wednesday by winning the 2018 Big 12 Championship at Southern Hills Country Club, the program’s first conference title since 2006.
OU won by the title by eight strokes with a four-round 1139 (+19), tied for the third-lowest 72-hole score in Big 12 Championship history. No. 1 Oklahoma State and No. 18 Texas tied for second place at 1147 (+27), while Iowa State placed fourth with a four-round 1148 (+28). No. 10 Baylor was fifth at 1157 (+37).
Despite rainy conditions during the fourth round, OU posted the lowest round of the day among the 10-team field at 287 (+7) to claim its first conference championship under ninth-year head coach Ryan Hybl.
“This is huge for our program,” Hybl said. “I feel like we have the best conference in college golf with the best coaches in the country. This is a really big deal for us to win against a very strong field on a championship golf course. This is a phenomenal win for us.”
Senior Grant Hirschman became the first OU player since 2005 to earn individual medalist honors at the Big 12 Championship with a 72-hole 283 (+3). The senior shared the honors with Texas’ Doug Ghim, Oklahoma State’s Kristoffer Ventura and Kansas State’s Jeremy Gandon. During Wednesday’s final round, he carded a 73 (+3) to earn his third individual victory at Oklahoma.
Hirschman joins Anthony Kim (2005), John Kidwell (2002) and Hunter Haas (1998) as the only Sooners to win the individual title at the Big 12 Championship. The Collierville, Tenn., native, sank the final putt for the Sooners on hole No. 18 to seal OU's fourth team victory of the season.
“This (team) win is validation for us and it’s all about winning more championships,” Hirschman said. “It means a lot. I’m a senior leader so I wanted to be able to have that last putt to win a championship for our team.”
Hirschman was joined on the Big 12 All-Tournament Team by junior Brad Dalke and redshirt sophomore Quade Cummins as both players tied for seventh overall at 286 (+6). Dalke posted a 71 (+1) during Wednesday’s final round, while Cummins carded a 73 (+3) to close out the event.
Junior Blaine Hale saved his best for the final round, recording OU’s lowest score of the day with an even-par 72. The junior opened Wednesday’s final 18 holes with 11 straight pars and picked up three birdies on the back nine. Hale finished tied for 14th place at 289 (+9).
Senior Rylee Reinertson rounded out OU’s lineup in a tie for 26th place overall at 293 (+13), carding a 75 (+5) during the fourth round.
The Sooners will host an NCAA Regional on May 14-16 at the Jimmie Austin Golf Club. The selections for the NCAA Division I Men’s Golf Championship will be announced on Wednesday, May 2 at 4:30 p.m. CT live on Golf Channel.
