NORMAN – The No. 44 Oklahoma women’s tennis team was defeated by No. 35 Wichita State, 5-2, Sunday at the Headington Family Tennis Center.
With the loss, OU drops to 10-9 overall. Wichita State improves to 15-6.
The Sooners gave up the doubles point, but fought back in singles with Camila Romero and Malene Stripp picking up victories on courts four and six, respectively. The teams traded points in the match, with the contest coming down to courts three and five, where Christie Brigante and Simran Sethi both battled, but were defeated in three sets.
“I think it’s two solid wins for Cami (Romero) and Malene (Stripp). Cami played a little bit higher in the lineup today, so it was nice to see her pull out a straight-set win,” said head coach Audra Cohen. “I think everyone fought and Christie (Brigante) was in a really tough battle over there and just the amount of heart she put on the court ... I’m really proud of her for doing that and Simran (Sethi) was in a battle, too. It’s always a tough loss to lose the ones that feel that tight, but we have to get back to the drawing board and get to work and make the most of our next opportunities.”
In doubles action, Stripp and fellow senior Lily Miyazaki grabbed a win on court two, making quick work of WSU’s Ting-Ya Hsu and Giulia Guidetti, 6-2.
At No. 1, OU’s Brigante and Jasmine Asghar were defeated by Marta Bellucco and Fatima Bizhukova, 6-2.
That left court three to decide the point. OU's Camila Romero and Simran Sethi battled with Sandra Honigova and Alexandra Lazarova, but fell, 6-3, to give Wichita State a 1-0 lead in the match.
In singles, Stripp was the first Sooner off the court, dominating Lazarova, 6-1, 6-0, from the No. 6 line to tie the match at 1-1.
Asghar fell to Wichita State’s Honigova, 6-4, 6-1, on court two, and the Shockers regained the lead, 2-1.
OU’s Romero evened things out at 2-2 with a 6-2, 6-3, victory over Bellucco from the No. 4 line
The Shockers’ Bizhukova then defeated No. 28 Miyazaki, 6-2, 6-3, in the top spot to make to retake the lead.
The match came down to courts three and five. At No. 3, OU’s Brigante battled, but was defeated by Guidetti after a three-setter, 3-6, 6-0, 6-4. The senior won the first set handily before Guidetti rallied back to clinch the match for Wichita State.
Simran Sethi went the distance with WSU’s Gabriela Porubin on court five, but ultimately fell, 6-4, 1-6, 6-3.
The Sooners return to action on Thursday, when they will host Oral Roberts in a doubleheader, with matches beginning at 1 and 4 p.m. CT at the Headington Family Tennis Center.
