WACO, Texas – Mariah Lopez and Paige Lowary combined for No. 2/3 Oklahoma's first no-hitter of the season as the Sooners run-ruled No. 15 Baylor 9-0 in five innings.
The Sooners (30-2, 5-0 Big 12) claimed the series over the Lady Bears (20-8, 0-2 Big 12) as OU extended its winning streak to 21 consecutive games, the longest active streak in Division I. Additionally, OU has now won 35 straight road contests, dating back to 2016.
The no-hitter was the 50th in program history, but just the fourth ever that was a combined effort. The only other instances came on May 6, 2017, when Nicole Mendes and Lowary did so against Oklahoma State, on May 15, 2015, when Paige Parker and Kelsey Stevens did it against Central Arkansas in the NCAA Regional and on Feb. 17, 2001, when Jennifer Stewart and Adrianne Ratliff no-hit Creighton.
Lopez moved to 9-0 on the season as she tossed the first three innings with three strikeouts. Lowary closed the final two frames, registering one strikeout. Only two Baylor batters reached in the contest, one on an error and another who was hit by a pitch.
OU was also dominant at the plate in its 13th run-rule win of the season. Kelsey Arnold led the offense with a 2-for-2 performance, scoring two runs, while Fale Aviu drove in three runs in the game for her fourth multi-RBI game of the year.
The Sooners plated four runs in the top of the second inning and never looked back. With the bases loaded and no outs, Aviu looped an RBI single to center to plate Nicole Mendes from third. Jocelyn Alo's RBI double down the left line brought in Lea Wodach and Arnold. Shay Knighten reached on an error on a hard-hit ball to shortstop, allowing Alo to score to push OU's lead to 4-0.
OU extended its lead to 7-0 in the top of the third, aided by a pair of Baylor errors. After reaching on a fielder’s choice and advancing to second on a throwing error, Mendes stole third and came around to score on an error from Baylor catcher Carlee Wallace.
An RBI groundout from Aviu followed by a Sydney Romero's RBI double gave OU's pitching staff a 7-0 advantage, tying Romero with Alo for the team lead with 42 RBIs this season.
OU tacked on two more runs in the fourth inning. After pinch hitter Raegan Rogers reached on a hit-by-pitch to score Nicole Pendley, Aviu registered her third RBI of the night as Mendes scored on a groundout.
Overall, the Sooners are outscoring their opponents 49-1 in conference play this season.
The final game of the series is scheduled for Saturday at 6 p.m. CT. The contest is slated to be aired on ESPN and can also be heard via KEBC 1560 AM or online through the Franchise 2.
