NORMAN – The University of Oklahoma baseball team lost a non-conference Bedlam game to Oklahoma State, 7-1, in front of 2,009 at L. Dale Mitchell Park on Tuesday night. The Sooners fell to 17-10 overall, while the Cowboys improved to 12-10-1.

Each team left two runners on base in the first, but most notably OU junior right fielder Steele Walker (Prosper, Texas) was ejected after taking a called strike three.

“He did not say anything to him that I know of,” OU head coach Skip Johnson commented on Walker’s ejection. “He tapped the outside of the plate where the ball supposedly was and then he dumped him. It happens with umpires you just have to move on. I just wanted to get out and calm the situation and move on with it.”

Walks taken by OSU hurt the Sooners as two in the second set up a two-out, RBI-single by second baseman Ryan Cash to plate the first run of the game on a bounding ball through the left side. A third walk was issued to load the bases and Cowboys catcher Colin Simpson unloaded a grand slam to make it a 5-0 game.

“When you do not execute, when you don’t win the free base on balls in the second inning, that is what really killed us,” said Johnson. “We started really having quality at-bats [later on], we just did not get the really big hit that we needed to.”

Right-hander C.J Varela (2-0) pitched five-scoreless in the win for Oklahoma State. He scattered four hits and two walks, allowing just one run to go with two strikeouts. Junior RHP Dylan Grove (Moore, Okla.) took the loss in two innings for the Sooners. Grove (1-1) issued five walks and gave up two hits, yielding five runs, while striking out two.

Redshirt-sophomore center fielder Kyler Murray (Allen, Texas) drove in the only OU run of the night on a double in the third. He was 2-for-3 on the night with a walk.

Simpson finished the night 2-for-5 with four RBI and two runs. Cash went 3-for-5 with a run and a RBI.

Oklahoma returns to action on Thursday, March 29 to start a home series against Baylor at 6:30 p.m. The series finale on Saturday will be the Sooners’ annual “Bark in the Park”.
