WACO, Texas The No. 49 Oklahoma women’s tennis team made a comeback bid late in singles action, but came up short at No. 28 Baylor, falling 5-0.

With the loss, OU moves to 10-7 on the season and 2-2 in Big 12 play. Baylor is now 10-10 with a 1-3 mark in conference action.

"Today was a tough match," said head coach Audra Cohen. "We had quite a few chances on a few of the courts to put the match away in straight sets and unfortunately we let them back in. I think overall, we are playing better tennis as the season progresses, and moving forward we need to expect to have to step up, be strong, and finish the job."

The Sooners gave up the doubles point to start the match. Simran Sethi and Camila Romero were defeated by Baylor’s Teresa Van Zyl and Giorgia Testa at the three spot, 6-2.

On court one, OU’s Christie Brigante and Jasmine Asghar fell to No. 62 Jessica Hinojosa and Kristina Sorokolet, 6-4, and the Bears took the opening point.

When play was halted, seniors Lily Miyazaki and Malene Stripp trailed Baylor’s Angie Shakhraichuk and Dominika Sujova, 5-4, on court two.

In singles play, Baylor took an early 2-0 lead when Sethi fell to the Bears’ Hinojosa, 6-0, 6-2, on court four and Brigante was defeated by Camilla Abbate, 6-3, 6-1, at the three spot.

OU battled back on the remaining courts, but Baylor clinched the match on court six before the Sooners could close. Stripp fell to Livia Kraus after a second-set tiebreaker, 6-2, 7-6 (5).

Romero was defeated by Angelina Shakhraichuk at No. 5 singles, 1-6, 6-4, 6-3. The freshman came out firing in the first set, giving up just one game before Shakhraichuk won the second to force a deciding frame and claimed the match to give Baylor a 5-0 victory.

When play was abandoned, No. 28 Miyazaki was just two points away from defeating Sorokolet in a second-set tiebreaker on court one, up 6-4, 6-6 (5-3). Miyazaki led 4-0 in the first set before Sorokolet got on the board and came within two games of Miyazaki before the senior closed it out. Sorokolet took the Sooner to the wire in the second frame, but Miyazaki looked to finish.

Asghar was just starting her third set, up 1-0, after splitting the previous frames. In the first set, Asghar trailed 2-0 before tying Van Zyl at every point to 4-all. The sophomore took control and broke at deuce point to win the first frame before the Bears’ Van Zyl prevailed after an extended second set

The Sooners return to the Headington Family Tennis Center Saturday for a Bedlam matchup with Oklahoma State at noon CT. OU will also host Wichita State Sunday, also at noon CT.
