Sooners Outlast Matadors in Extras
NORTHRIDGE, Calif. – In its first extra-inning game of the season, No. 5/5 Oklahoma outlasted CSUN 2-1 in 11 innings on Monday.
With the win, OU moved to 25-2 on the season and extended its winning streak to 16 games. Additionally, the Sooners have now won 33 consecutive road consests, dating back to the 2016 season.
Fale Aviu delivered the game-winning single in the top of the 11th that scored Jocelyn Alo from first base. The junior's perfectly placed single split the gap in right center gap to put OU in front. Paige Parker shut the door in the bottom of the frame to seal the win. Parker pitched 7.0 innings in relief, allowing no runs or hits while striking out five batters and walking one.
The senior moved to 14-1 on the season with the win. Parker stepped in at the start of the fifth inning after Paige Lowary tossed the first 4.0 frames, surrendering one run on three hits while registering one strikeout and one walk.
For the second consecutive game, the Sooners jumped out to a 1-0 lead behind a solo home run from Alo. The shot was Alo’s 12th of the season, which leads the Big 12.
The Matadors tied the contest at 1-1 in the bottom of the third as Megan Stevens' sacrifice fly to center field scored Pudi Hernandez.
The Sooners were unable to capitalize on several opportunities to score early in the game. One of their best chances came in the top of the second as Fale Aviu walked, Nicole Mendes reached on a fielder’s choice and Kelsey Arnold walked to load the bases. However, the trio was left stranded with a strikeout and a line out.
The game was OU’s first extra inning game since June 5, 2017, when the Sooners defeated Florida in 17 innings in the first game of the WCWS Championship Series.
Up next, the Sooners begin their hunt for their unprecedented seventh straight Big 12 regular season title on March 23-25 as they begin conference play against Texas Tech. OU hosts the Red Raiders on Friday at 6:30 p.m. CT, on Saturday at 1 p.m. CT and on Sunday at 2 p.m. CT.
