NORMAN – The Oklahoma women’s tennis team picked up its third straight victory with a 6-1 win over Pacific Saturday at the Headington Family Tennis Center.
OU captured the doubles point to open the match with wins on courts three and one, then picked up singles victories on courts one, three, four, five and six to take the match.
"We’re really gaining confidence in each court," said head coach Audra Cohen. "The whole team is coming together in terms of getting to work at their position and doing whatever they can to win on their court and everyone has an opportunity to win on their court. I feel like we’re solidifying some holes that we may have earlier in January, and coming around to being confident on each court, which is really key."
In doubles action, Simran Sethi and Camila Romero rolled to a 6-1 victory over Dohee Lee and Yuki Asami on court three to get things started for the Sooners.
Jasmine Asghar and Christie Brigante captured the point for OU with a 6-2 win over Karina Vyrlan and Anneroos Nederstigt.
When play was halted, Skyler Miller and Malene Stripp were tied at 4 with Dohee Lee and Yuki Asami from the No. 2 line.
Romero picked up the Sooners’ first singles win of the day with a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Ioana Popescu on court five.
"She’s gotten better with every match and more comfortable with dual matches," said Cohen of the freshman. "It’s always tricky to play dual matches after playing tournaments your whole life as an individual then all of the sudden you have the pressure of the team and a whole new environment. She’s handled it better as each match has gone on and to see her get off the court first today and really play her tennis from start to finish, doubles and singles, was really good for her.”
Brigante also rolled to a 6-0, 6-1, win on court three, taking down Lee for her third consecutive singles win.
Sethi made quick work Ramos Vinolas, 6-0, 6-1, from the No. 5 line. The senior has given up just to games in the last two matches she’s played.
ITA No. 18 Miyazaki also pushed her winning streak to three matches with a 6-1, 6-2, victory over Vyrlan in the one slot.
Stripp held on to win her match in a 10-point tiebreaker in lieu of a third set, defeating Nederstigt, 4-6, 6-1, 1-0 (4). In the superbreaker, Stripp traded games with Nederstigt before tying the frame at 4, then took over to capture the match. The win was good for the senior’s third consecutive singles victory.
Asghar fell to Maayan Sela, 7-5, 6-3, at No. 2. Sela remains undefeated on the year at 4-0 in singles.
The Sooners return to the Headington Family Tennis Center Friday, Feb. 23 to face USF at 5 p.m.
