NORMAN – In the opening game of conference action, the Oklahoma soccer team dropped a 4-1 decision to No. 22 Oklahoma State at the Cowgirl Soccer Complex in Stillwater, Okla.
This was the second Bedlam meeting of the season, with the Cowgirls sweeping the series for the first time since 2013. This is the sixth time a team has swept the season series, the last being an Oklahoma sweep in 2016.
"OSU capitalized on opportunities and credit to them for finishing in a composed way," head coach Matt Potter said. "Any loss hurts, especially to our rival, but the day belongs to them."
With 11 minutes left in play, the Sooners trailed by just a goal as Rasha Roberts netted her eighth career goal. Trailing 2-0, Tori Bowman took a free kick from 30 yards out, connecting with Roberts in the box. Roberts collected the pass and immediately fired from ten yards out to make it a 2-1 game.
"Rasha scored a great goal to put us back in it, but the game management let us down," Potter said. "We felt we had a plan to imprint ourselves at halftime, but we didn't match the endeavor of our rival."
The Cowgirls would strike right back, netting a goal in the 80th minute as Haley Woodard went one-on-one with OU keeper McKinley Crone. In the 89th minute, Taylor Olsen caught Crone out of the box, firing on an open net.
OSU jumped out to a 2-0 lead with a pair of goals in the second half. In the 51st minute, Haley Woodard scored on a give-and-go play with Camy Huddleston from five yards out. Huddleston would notch a goal in the 62nd minute, converting a corner kick from 10 yards out.
Oklahoma was narrowly edged in the shot department, recording 16 to OSU’s 17. Bowman led the offense with four shots on the night, while Kristina O’Donnell, Emma Ledbetter and Ivanna Rivas each tallied a pair.
The Sooners will wrap up non-conference play on Sunday, Sept. 24 at Loyola Marymount.
