NAIA Men’s Golf Coaches’ Final Top 25 Poll

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – As has been the case in every poll this season, Texas Wesleyan ranks No. 1 in the NAIA Men’s Golf Coaches’ Top 25 Poll, the national office announced Thursday. The Rams received 15 first-place votes and 584 points en route to the top spot in the final regular season edition.

Team and individual qualifiers for the 62nd annual NAIA Men’s Golf National Championships will be released by 5 p.m. CDT on The first and second round pairings for the event will be unveiled Friday by 3 p.m. CDT.

The Rams finished third at the Red River Athletic Conference Tournament April 29 – 30 with a 54-hole score of 878 (291-295-292). Three Texas Wesleyan athletes finished tied for sixth – Blake Vinson (74-73-73—220), Jose Pablo Rolz (71-72-77—220) and Nathan Anderson (74-75-71—220) – to highlight the squad.

The remainder of the top five went unchanged with No. 2 Oklahoma City (576 points), No. 3 Cal State San Marcos (549 points), No. 4 Cumberlands (Ky.) (534 points) and No. 5 (tied) Johnson & Wales (Fla.) (487 points) rounding out the group. Oklahoma City, Cal State San Marcos and Cumberlands each won team titles at their respective conference tournaments, while Johnson & Wales finished tied for third. Oklahoma City (5) and Cal State San Marcos (1) collected the edition’s remaining first-place votes.

No. 5 (tied) Lee (Tenn.) is the sixth member of the group with 487 points. The Flames carded a team score of 282-284-285—851 to win their second-straight Southern States Athletic Conference (SSAC) Tournament championship held April 15 – 17 at Lagoon Park in Montgomery, Ala. Florian Loutre earned individual medalist honors with a score of 207 (70-67-70), while teammate Matt Emery was tied for second with a 212 (69-71-72) at the event.

Faulkner (Ala.) experienced the largest positive shift in the Top 25 this week, vaulting six places from No. 19 to No. 13. The Eagles had won four-straight tournaments before finishing second at the SSAC Tournament by four strokes. At the SSAC Tournament, Faulkner had four of its five individuals finish within the top 10, including Brandon Godwin (73-68-71—212) and Daniel Jansen (69-74-69—212) tying for second place.

On the other hand, No. 25 Lubbock Christian (Texas) suffered the farthest fall within the poll. The Chaps dropped seven places from No. 17 after taking fifth behind Oklahoma City, No. 11 Wayland Baptist (Texas), No. 20 Rogers State (Okla.) and No. 22 Oklahoma Baptist at the Sooner Athletic Conference (SAC) Tournament.

Rogers State, who finished third at the SAC Tournament with a team score of 927 (311-308-308), joins the poll for the first time this season. The Hillcats were last ranked on March 16, 2012.

Twelve conferences/independents/unaffiliated groups are represented in the Top 25. The Sooner Athletic Conference boasts the most representation with five ranked members.

The poll was voted upon by a panel of head coaches representing each of the conferences, independents and unaffiliated groups. The postseason Top 25 poll will be announced on May 24.

Notes (All information as of 2000): Texas Wesleyan is making its fifth all-time appearance at No. 1, which ranks third all-time … The Rams are the only program to hold the No. 1 spot in 2013 …Oklahoma City boasts the most No. 1 rankings with 37, followed by former NAIA member Oklahoma Christian’s 28 … Since 2002, Texas Wesleyan and British Columbia (2009) are the only schools other than Oklahoma City and Oklahoma Christian to appear at No. 1 … Only eight squads have received the No. 1 ranking – Oklahoma City, Oklahoma Christian, Texas Wesleyan, Johnson & Wales (Fla.), Simon Fraser (B.C.), Berry (Ga.), British Columbia and North Greenville (S.C.) …Oklahoma City has never been ranked outside of the top five …Twenty-nine teams have been ranked this season.
