Hornets Claim SWAC Women's Cross Country Title
Clinton, Miss. - The Alabama State Hornets claimed the Southwestern Athletic Conference Championship in Women's Cross Country on October 31st at the Conference Championship in Clinton, Mississippi.
The Hornets finished with an overall time of 1:36:43.79; scoring 31 points in the event and averaging 19:20.76. The Grambling State Tigers followed in second place with a time of 1:40:43.22 and a score of 79 points, while the Prairie View A&M Panthers staked third, completing the race in 1:42:44.30 and scoring 106 points.
Arkansas-Pine Bluff runner Ninfa Barnard (18:09.58) finished first individually in the women's 5k event, earning All-SWAC honors. Following seconds behind, Mississippi Valley State's Joyce Chumo (18:21.88) took second place, and Courtney Gooch (19:02.29), of Alabama, State finished third.
Gooch, Alabama State's top finisher, led a group of four Hornets to finish in the top ten, earning the Alabama State the Conference Championship. Gooch and teammate Soyong Smith were named to the First Team All-Conference, along with individual champion Ninfa Barnard (UAPB), Joyce Chumo (MVSU), and Shaquea Howard (GSU).
Runners Lutrisha Altidor (ASU), Winny Tauni (MVSU) Kesia Derilus (ASU), Raheema Hodges (ASU), and Shaquina Phalo (A&M) garnered Second Team All-Conference honors.
Alabama State Head Coach Ritchie Beene was named the SWAC Women's Coach of the Year.
