UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - The University of Richmond has released its men's soccer schedule for the 2012 season. The Spiders will open play at home with an exhibition match against High Point on Aug. 11 before commencing regular-season competition on the road against in-state rival James Madison in the Virginia Tech Tournament two weeks later.

"The schedule sets up nicely," said head coach Clint Peay. "There's a good combination of NCAA Tournament teams mixed in with regional powers. We feels it's a schedule that allows us to be competitive in each game and one that in nonconference play will prepare us to face the many challenges we'll have in conference play."

Following its exhibition opener against the Panthers, Richmond will then complete preseason play on Aug. 18 at Campbell. After the season-opener against the Dukes, who are coming off a third round appearance in this past season's NCAA Tournament, the Spiders will wrap up Virginia Tech Tournament play when they square off against the host Hokies on Aug. 26.

Richmond will then make the quick trip down I-64 to Williamsburg, Va., to face William and Mary on Sept. 1 before traveling to Davidson, N.C., to take on the host Wildcats (Sept. 8) and Appalachian State (Sept. 10) in the Davidson Tournament.

The Spiders conclude their six-match road swing at Navy the following Saturday, Sept. 15 in Annapolis before returning home to host Longwood (Sept. 18) and VMI (Sept. 21) at Robins Stadium. The program completes the nonconference portion of its schedule on Sept. 25 at Liberty.

Richmond opens Atlantic 10 play and the month of October with a pair of home matches against George Washington (Oct. 5) and NCAA National runner-up Charlotte (Oct. 7). Conference action continues the following weekend when the team makes its way westward to visit new league member Butler (Oct. 12), which is expected to immediately vie for a conference title, in Indianapolis and perennial powerhouse Saint Louis (Oct. 14).

The Spiders' four-match road trip concludes with visits to La Salle (Oct. 19) and Fordham (Oct. 21). The team returns home to welcome Dayton (Oct. 26) and 2011 NCAA Tournament qualifier Xavier (Oct. 28) the final weekend of October before closing out its league slate in what will be a highly anticipated road match against cross-town rival and new conference member VCU.

The Atlantic 10 Championship is scheduled for Nov. 7-11 on the campus of Charlotte at the 49ers' Transamerica Field. Eight of the league's 16 squads will earn berths into the 2012 conference tournament.
