UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - Defending Atlantic 10 Champion Richmond will play three teams that joined the Spiders in the 2011 NCAA Tournament as Richmond goes for its eighth NCAA Tournament in the last 11 years in 2012.
The Spiders play 2011 Final Four participant Old Dominion, along with 2011 NCAA Tournament teams Princeton and Duke. Richmond gave ODU a tough game in Richmond last season before dropping a 2-0 decision and won on the road at nationally ranked Princeton in 2011.
Richmond will also play city-rival VCU as a conference opponent for the first time in over a decade. The Rams joined the Atlantic 10 last month and will begin play immediately.
"The 2012 schedule has many opportunities awaiting the Richmond squad," Richmond head coach Gina Lucido said. "Conference realignment has posed VCU as a threatening opponent in the mix for an A-10 Conference Championship. Additionally, three NCAA tournament teams in ODU, Duke, and Princeton, coupled with national recognized American & UVA, provide a grueling out of conference schedule for the Spiders."
Richmond opens conference play on Oct. 6, hosting UMass. The Spiders also play A-10 foes Saint Joseph's, Temple and La Salle at home, while travelling to VCU, Saint Louis and Lock Haven.
"Truly if we are intentional about forgetting the past and straining towards what is ahead, keeping our eyes focused on the prize, I believe Richmond will gain further national recognition," Lucido said. "We must be fearless and united to make new history at Richmond. I have great faith in what is to come."
The Spiders have won seven of the last 10 Atlantic 10 Regular-Season and Tournament titles and have a 72-10 record against Atlantic 10 teams over the last 10 years, including a 57-7 record in Atlantic 10 Conference regular-season play.
