ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Chris Wehan, a junior midfielder for the University of New Mexico men’s soccer team, has been named to the watch list for the Missouri Athletic Club’s Hermann Trophy. The MAC Hermann Trophy is the most prestigious individual award in NCAA soccer presented annually to one male and one female athlete.

“This is definitely a surprise,” said Wehan, a native of Laguna Niguel, Calif. “It’s a nice feeling to be mentioned among the best players in the nation, but I don’t want it to get in the way of this team preparing for a good season.”

Wehan is one of 30 male nominees for the award. He led the Lobos in goals (10) and points (22) last season en route to All-Conference USA First Team honors. In 40 career games, including 38 starts, he has 13 goals, three assists and 29 points, including four game-winning goals.

“It’s a pretty special honor to make the MAC Hermann watch list,” Wehan said, “but my goals this year are just to step into a leadership position on the team. I want us to be successful as a team, winning big games and advancing far into the postseason, because I think we have the players to do that.”

UNM head coach Jeremy Fishbein wasn’t surprised by the recognition.

“It’s really deserving,” he said. “He’s an incredibly teammate as well as a great leader. I’m excited to continue to watch his progress this season.”

The Lobos open their preseason schedule with a pair of home exhibition matches. The first is Saturday, Aug. 15 against Air Force at 7 p.m., and the second is against Grand Canyon on Wednesday, Aug. 19 at 7 p.m.

UNM opens the regular season at No. 1 UCLA on Saturday, Aug. 29, and its first home match of the regular season will be on Friday, Sept. 4 vs. San Diego at 7 p.m.
