ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The University of New Mexico volleyball team opens its 2015 campaign tomorrow as it holds the first practices of the season Wednesday morning in Johnson Center on the main campus of UNM.

The Lobos, under ninth-year head coach Jeff Nelson, will have two practice sessions almost every day for the next couple of weeks in anticipation for the start of their regular season at the Ball State Tournament on Aug. 28.

The practices, which generally are in the morning and early afternoon in Johnson Center, are open to the media and the public.

Wednesday’s and Thursday’s practices are 9 a.m. and 2 p.m.

New Mexico returns the bulk of its team that won 19 games last season, and have added a number of talented newcomers as it looks to vie for a top finish in the Mountain West.

2014 All-MW performers Hannah Johnson, Julia Warren and Cassie House all return for the Lobos, who also bring back five starters and lose only two major contributors.

The veteran depth — which includes Devanne Sours, Skye Gullatt and Simone Henderson — will be key for New Mexico as they look to replace All-American Chantale Riddle, who graduated last fall.

Transfer Marisa Doran and freshman Carson Heilborn are two of the UNM newcomers that can make an immediate impact, along with Mercedes Pacheco and Allie Askew.

Also joining New Mexico for the 2015 season is Lobo great Pauline Manser, who returns to her alma mater as an assistant coach after an illustrious playing and coaching career in her native Australia.

After an intrasquad exhibition Aug. 20, New Mexico opens its regular season against Belmont at on Friday, Aug. 28 at the Ball State Tournament in Muncie, Ind. The Lobos will then take on Albany and host Ball State to round out their opening weekend.

The Lobos' home opening weekend, Sept. 4-5, will draw Cal State Fullerton, Santa Clara and SMU for the Lobo Classic at Johnson Center.
