ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The University of New Mexico women’s basketball program finished up its first camp of the summer Thursday morning, the Yvonne Sanchez Individual Basketball Camp that featured nearly 100 campers.

The camp started on Monday (June 8) and finished Thursday (June 11), giving the campers four days to really grasp the concepts the women’s basketball program was teaching. The campers started early at 9 a.m., warmed up, ran drills and played games until they were released at noon.

All hands were on deck as coach Sanchez, Joseph AndersAnthony TurnerAmy BegginJourdan ErskineVera Jo Bustos and a handful of players were all involved with the camp and all really pushed fundamentals of the game over the past four days.

But making basketball fun was a priority for the campers as well.

“If they can get out of this camp how much fun they can have playing basketball,” said assistant coach Beggin. “When they really put in time and effort into something they can see how successful they can be at it.

“These four days of camp had a really good taste of the skill and development of basketball. If they can take that and do those things on a daily basis, they will see how successful they can be.”

The camp wasn’t just fun for the campers but it was fun for the coaches as well.

“I had a blast,” said Beggin. “I love working with the kids and I love working these camps. It is so fun to be around that many kids who have a passion for the game and just want to have fun.

Director of Operations Jourdan Erskine felt the same way as Beggin. “This is one of my favorites things to do when it comes to being in the athletic industry. I remember when I was little and how it used to feel. For them to come in and have the players and coaches work with them, it’s just an all around great time and it’s nice to give back to the community.”

Next up for the program will be the 2015 Yvonne Sanchez Team Camp that will be held June 15-17. Registration is currently closed as the camp has reached the maximum number of participants. Following the team camp, women’s hoops will host the Yvonne Sanchez Elite Camp June 18-20. Registration is still open for that specific camp and you can register online at CoachYvonneSanchez.com.
