Greensboro, N.C. – Big man Devin Haygood turned in a season-high 17 points on 7-10 shooting to lift the Aggies over Longwood, 52-41, in the Corbett Sports Center on Wednesday night.
“A win is a win,” began head coach Jay Joyner. “Some guys stepped up. Great team effort. They gutted it out and we got a win.”
N.C. A&T improves to 3-6 overall and 2-1 at home. Andre Jackson put up a nice all-around performance with 10 points, five assists and 6 rebounds. Ronald Jackson nearly recorded a double-double with nine points and eight rebounds.
N.C. A&T quickly jumped out to a 7-0 lead. Longwood responded with six straight points to cut the deficit to one. With the Lancers leading 22-15 both teams went scoreless for nearly three minutes from 8:02 to 5:23. After a Ronald Jackson missed jumper at the buzzer, the Aggies would head into the locker room trailing 27-24.
The Lancers scored the first two points of the second half to take a 29-24 lead, but the Aggies would make a quick turnaround to tie the game at 30 with under 14 minutes to play. The Aggies would take the lead on an Andre Jackson free throw, 36-35, and never look back. A thunderous dunk from Ronald Jackson gave the Aggies all the momentum to eventually win the contest, 52-41. Free throw shooting proved to be the difference as the Aggies went 6-7 down the stretch to ice the game, including a 4-4 effort from Fred Cleveland, Jr.
The Aggies now hit the road to take on Bradley University on Saturday at 2 p.m. in Peoria, Ill.
