Lopez-Portillo Blast Lifts Bison Past Indiana State

ATHENS, Ga.--Maritza Lopez-Portillo hit the game-winning home run and Krista Menke tossed a two-hitter as North Dakota State University defeated Indiana State University 4-2 in the final game of the Georgia Bulldog Invitational played Sunday, March 3, at Jack Turner Stadium.
North Dakota State (7-10) finished the tournament with a 3-2 record. The Bison open play against Idaho State at the Long Beach State Invitational on Friday, March 8.
The Bison trailed 2-1 heading into the fifth inning. Alex Sobrero singled and Alyssa Reina reached on a fielder's choice to put runners aboard with two outs. Lopez-Portillo launched a 3-1 pitch down the left field line for her second home run of the season.
Indiana State (9-10) and NDSU traded runs in the first inning. Paige Wilson's sacrifice bunt sent home the Sycamores run in the top of the frame, while Amanda Grable's RBI single to right knocked in Cheyenne Garcia for the Bison.
ISU took a 2-1 lead in the top of the second. Ashley Dickerson singled, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt and scored on a fielder's choice.
Menke (2-5) went the distance and picked up her first win since the opening game of the season. Menke walked five and struck out three.
Ashli Scott, Steph Fougerousse and Halle Humphrey pitched for the Sycamores with Fougerousse picking up the loss. The trio combined to allow five hits, walk five and strike out six.
Grable and Sobrero each had two hits for NDSU. Grable also turned in a career best seven fielding assists from her third base position.
