Bison Softball Comes Back to Defeat Memphis 4-1 at LSU Purple & Gold Challenge

BATON ROUGE, La.--Whitney Johnson tossed a two-hitter and the offense scored four times in the sixth inning as North Dakota State University rallied past the University of Memphis 4-1 on Sunday, Feb. 17, in the final game of the LSU Purple & Gold Challenge at Tiger Park.
North Dakota State (4-6) finished with a 3-2 record at the Challenge. The Bison open Carolina Classic at 9 a.m. (Central) Friday, Feb. 22, against George Washington in Chapel Hill, N.C.
Johnson, a senior from Lake Crystal, Minn., notched her third win in the tournament. She recorded her eighth career two-hitter. Johnson struck out three and walked two.
Johnson (3-2) completed the tournament with a 0.28 earned run average. She struck out 29, walked 11 and allowed 10 hits in 24-2/3 innings of work. Johnson and teammate. freshman catcher Alyssa Reina were named to the all-tournament team.
Memphis (2-8) took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning. Laura Curtis doubled to left with two outs and scored on an NDSU error. Morgan Mosby had the other hit for the Tigers.
North Dakota State rallied with four runs in the top of the sixth. Amanda Grable opened with a walk and pinch-runner Jenna Isbel moved to second on a Maritza Lopez-Portillo sacrifice bunt. Reina followed with a walk.
Jenina Ortega delivered a pinch-hit two-run double down the left field line. The Bison took advantage of a Memphis error and Logan Moreland's RBI single through the left side.
North Dakota State scored 12 of its 14 runs in the sixth inning of five tournament games.
Sara Pearson, Jordan Richwood (1-2) and Ellen Roberts pitched for Memphis with Richwood picking up the loss. The trio combined to walk nine, strike out six and allow four hits.
