BROOKINGS, S.D.--Whitney Johnson struck out 12 and Taylor Mortensen accounted for both runs as North Dakota State University defeated South Dakota State University 2-0 in a Summit League softball game played Sunday, April 29, at Jackrabbit Softball Stadium.

North Dakota State (16-5 Summit, 32-18) won two of three games and hosts Southern Utah (14-7 Summit, 28-21) in the Summit League regular season final series May 4-5. The Bison are currently in first place and the Thunderbirds are tied for second with IPFW.

Johnson, a junior from Lake Crystal, Minn. (Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial H.S.) reached double-figure strikeouts for the seventh time this season and the 25th time in her career. She improved to 11-8 on the season.

In posting her fourth shutout of the season, Johnson worked out of trouble in the fifth inning when South Dakota State (5-16 Summit, 13-27-1) put together a pair of hits and advanced a runner to third. She retired the last seven batters faced.

North Dakota State scored in the top of the first. Katie Tamayo walked, advanced to second on Jamie Gay's sacrifice bunt and moved to third on a ground out. Mortensen came through with a two-out single to chase Tamayo home.

Mortensen, a senior from Sioux Falls, S.D., hit a home run to right center with one out in the top of the sixth inning. It was Mortensen's seventh home run of the season and ties her for team-high honors with Amanda Grable.

Pam Nicholson (5-14) and Kori Seidlitz combined for a three-hitter for SDSU. Nicholson walked four and struck out two in picking up the loss. Devon Reick led the Jackrabbits with two hits.
