IUPUI Defeats Bison Women 80-64 in Summit League Tournament Opener

SIOUX FALLS, S.D.--IUPUI outscored North Dakota State 17-5 over the last five minutes of the first half to open a 42-30 lead and then went on to defeat the Bison 80-64 in the opening round of the 2012 Summit League women's basketball tournament Sunday at the Sioux Falls Arena.
The victory puts No. 5 seed IUPUI, 13-18, in Monday's noon semifinal game against top-seeded South Dakota State.
After building the halftime lead, IUPUI shot 56 percent (13-for-23) in the second half while the Bison, who ended their season 11-20, shot just 22 percent (8-for-36).
Despite the shooting woes, the Bison closed within eight at 56-48 on a layup by Janae Burich with 9:11 to play. But a 12-2 IUPUI run, capped by a pair of free throws from Nevena Markovic, pushed the Jaguar lead back to 66-49. The margin increased to 21 when Kerah Nelson hit a free throw with 3:17 to go, making it 74-53.
Emily Phillips led four IUPUI players in double figures with 17 points while Dawn Luster had 16, Markovic 15 and Katie Comello contributed 10 points, eight rebounds and six assists.
Dani DeGagne led NDSU with 18 points while Hannah Linz had 17 and Burich contributed a double-double with 12 points and 14 rebounds.
For the game, IUPUI outshot NDSU 46.7 percent (28-for-60) to 29 percent (20-for-69) and had a 44-42 rebounding advantage. Nelson led IUPUI with 10 boards.
