Charlotte 49ers red-shirt senior nose tackle Larry Ogunjobi (Greensboro, N.C./Ragsdale H.S.) continues to make a name for himself and the 49ers upstart football porogram.
The Football Writers Association of America announced today that Ogunjobi is among the nation’s standout interior linemen named to the 2016 Outland Trophy Watch List. The list includes 53 interior offensive linemen and 17 interior defensive linemen.
It is the second major award that has placed Ogunjobi on its watch list. Earlier this week, Ogunjobi was named to the 2016 Bednarik Award, which is given to the College Defensive Player of the Year by the Maxwell Football Club.
Ogunjobi is the first 49er to be named to the Watch List of a major FBS award presented by the National College Football Awards Association, which includes both the Bednarik Award and the Outland Trophy. The 49ers are entering their second season at the FBS level as a member of Conference USA and its fourth season, overall.
Ogunjobi is one of four players from Conference USA named to the Outland Trophy Watch list and was one of two C-USA players named to the Bednarik Watch List. He is one of four players from a school in North Carolina named to the Outland Watch List and was one of three such players named to the Bednarik Watch List.
For the Outland Trophy Watch List, the SEC (12) led all conferences, followed by the Big Ten (11), ACC (10), Pac-12 (10), Big 12 (6), American Athletic (4), Conference USA (4), Independents (4), Mountain West (4), Mid-American (3) and Sun Belt (2).
Ogunjobi, who tied for second in Conference USA with a school-record 14.5 tackles for loss last season, ranks eighth among active FBS players in career tackles for loss. He is the 49ers career leader in tackles (152), TFL (35.5), sacks (10.0) and QB hurries (23). He had a career-high 62 tackles, last year, Charlotte’s first at the FBS level as a member of Conference USA, with double-digit tackles against C-USA foes Florida Atlantic (11) and UTSA (10). He set the 49ers single-game record with 4.5 TFL vs. UTSA.
The first 49er chosen to wear the program’s honorary #49 jersey, Ogunjobi became one of the first two 49ers to earn all-Conference USA honors, last year. He is one of just two players in the program’s history that have started each of the program’s 34 games and he did register the program’s first tackle for loss (TFL).
Ogunjobi and 49ers running back Kalif Phillips were named second team all-Conference USA, last year. A double major in chemistry and computer science, Ogunjobi has started all 34 games in Charlotte’s three-year football history. In the 49ers’ inaugural game, Aug. 31, 2013 vs. Campbell, he was the first player to wear the program’s honorary #49 jersey. A three-time C-USA Commissioner’s Honor Roll selection who started playing football as a sophomore in high school, Ogunjobi was dubbed C-USA’s “Most Interesting Man” by SB Nation, in February.
