CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Charlotte baseball has announced the addition of Tyler Simmons as the newest member of the 49ers coaching staff. Head Coach Loren Hibbs made the announcement on Tuesday that Simmons will fill the volunteer assistant position.
“We are excited to add Tyler to our staff,” remarked Hibbs. “He has played in winning programs and has learned from several tremendous coaches. He is a hard worker and high character young man.”
Simmons, a native of Charlotte, hit .322 in 38 games with the Wingate Bulldogs a year after sporting a .292 average. Simmons connected for five home runs and 23 runs driven in during his senior season.
“I am very excited to be about of the Charlotte program,” stated Simmons. “Growing up in Charlotte, I have been to many 49er events so getting the opportunity to coach in my hometown is very special for me.”
Wingate compiled a 30-22 record in 2016 under Head Coach Jeff Gregory. The Bulldogs made it to day four of the recent South Atlantic Conference championship before falling to the Tusculum Pioneers 9-6 in 11 innings to end their year.
“I am genuinely excited for Tyler to begin his coaching career at Charlotte,” commented Gregory. “This has been a goal of Tyler’s since he started at Wingate and I am happy to see him follow his passion. He has always been one to really understand what we did and how we did things. He played multiple positions during his time at Wingate and I think that will help him during his coaching career. Tyler worked extremely hard during his playing days and I think that work ethic will continue as he starts his coaching career. I think that the Charlotte family will enjoy having Tyler be a part of their program. I think he is going to do a fantastic job.”
