Baseball Places Four on C-USA All-Conference Teams

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Charlotte baseball saw four players land on Conference USA all-conference teams as announced by league officials on Tuesday afternoon. Brett Netzer, Logan Sherer and T.J. Nichting all ended up on the second team while Reece Hampton placed on the all-Freshman team. Nominees were turned in and selected prior to the final weekend of regular season play.

Netzer, an all-Freshman pick a year ago, led the team through 48 games hitting .387 on the year placing second in runs, hits, RBI, doubles, triple, home runs and walks. On C-USA weekends, Netzer hit .376 leading the team in that category and hits, runs and doubles. Highlights for the sophomore include hitting a walk-off home run against Wake Forest, a game-deciding three-run bomb against Marshall and recording 24 multi-hit games. Netzer tied or set seven career highs in 2016 and was inside the league’s top-five in doubles, average, on base percentage, hits, slugging and toughest to strikeout.

Sherer re-wrote his own personal record book leading the team in home runs (12), RBI (52), runs (47), slugging (.613), walks (27) and total bases (125). The junior led all of C-USA in RBI, slugging and total bases while standing second in home runs and runs scored. The first baseman also leads the team with 14 games of at-least two runs driven in while also tying or breaking nine career highs.

Nichting too had an impressive junior season leading the 49ers in hits, doubles, two-out RBI and multi-hit games. As a switch hitter, the right fielder posted a career best 17-game hit streak during the second half of the year, had a four-hit game at FAU and hit over .360 from both sides of the plate. Nichting led all of Conference USA in doubles, sat second in hits and top five in hitting overall.

Hampton was named to the all-Freshman team after beginning his career with a 17-game hit streak hitting safely in 41 of his first 46 games. The rookie hit .333 in his first 50 contests leading C-USA in at-bats. Among the league’s best, Hampton was top-ten in both hits and stolen bases while getting to 12th in stolen bases. Hampton was also among the 49ers best with 24 multi-hit games and led all Niners with 19 two-hit games. Also a switch hitter, Hampton hit .325 or better from both sides of the dish.

Netzer, Sherer, Nichting, Hampton and the rest of the 49ers begin Conference USA tournament play on Wednesday afternoon taking on top-seeded and nationally-ranked Florida Atlantic at 1:30 p.m. eastern.
