TEXARKANA, Ark. – The Charlotte men’s golf team posted a round one total of 299 (+11) to sit in ninth place after day one of the Conference USA Championship. Thomas Rowland led the Niners with his one-under par round of 71.
Rowland put together a very clean afternoon at the Texarkana Country Club opening with a birdie on the par-five second en route to his front side 35 (-1). On the back, another birdie on the par-five 12th would help erase the bogey on his last hole of the day to sit ninth overall.
Victor Wiggins accounted for Charlotte’s second score of the day after his one-over circuit of 73. Wiggins shot an even-par 36 after trading a bogey-birdie stint on the front nine, while a final birdie on 18 helped minimize his two bogies on the back.
Seth Gandy carded a three-over 75 on Sunday also using a pair of birdies, one on each side. Like Rowland, he too birdied the second and began his back nine with a birdie on 10. Nicolas Manifacier and Tyler Young each recorded a round of 80 (+8) in the opener. Manifacier drained his lone birdie of the day on the par-five seventh while Young settled down after a five-over start through six, to shoot three-over during his final 12 holes.
UAB holds the overnight lead after day one firing a three-under 285 as a team. The Blazers lead Louisiana Tech by one while North Texas, Old Dominion and Marshall are all seven shots back in a three-way tie for third.
Charlotte will be paired with Western Kentucky and UTEP in Monday's round two.
