KANNAPOLIS, N.C. – Charlotte men’s golf currently sits in 10th place at the Cabarrus County Irish Creek Collegiate after two rounds played on Saturday. The breezy conditions created a lot of havoc for not just the 49ers, but the entire 16-team field as only one team and seven individuals were able to put together rounds under par rounds on day one.
Seth Gandy had the best overall day for the 49ers carding a 71 (E) in round one followed by dropping his score to 68 (-3) in round two. Gandy’s 68 was the second best score of the afternoon round, only bested by Will Zalatoris’ 65 of Wake Forest. The southpaw started on the 10th hole and ran eight pars on his opening back nine to start his first round. His only front nine blemish would be a double bogey on 16.
Gandy’s second nine Saturday morning quickly improved his day as he picked up four birdies and sat at two-under through the opening 18. In round two, he got off to a quick start on the tenth hole again with a birdie, one of five on his second round scorecard. His second round 68 put him into a tie for second through 36 holes at Irish Creek.
Nicolas Manifacier struggled in his first round 76 (+5) before bouncing back in round two. Manifacier had six bogies in his first circuit around prior to closing his opening 18 with a birdie on the 10th. Manifacier posted a 75 (+4) in round two picking up a pair of birdies on holes two and seven on his second nine holes.
Victor Wiggins jumped out to a hot start with back-to-back birdies on his opening two holes of the morning where he went on to post a 74 (+3). As his round progressed, he ran into issues with five bogies over a seven-hole stretch. Wiggins had a bogey/birdie combination to help finish off his 74. In the second round, Wiggins stumbled out of the gate with five bogies over his first nine holes to start round two. After three birdies in a five-hole stretch, Wiggins unfortunately gave it back that led him to his 78 (+7).
Thomas Rowland began his first round on Saturday with a birdie on 14 that was lost with a bogey on 15. After a rare double on the 18th, Rowland would again trade a birdie/bogey combination to round out his 74 (+3). Rowland’s second round was highlighted with a birdie on the sixth hole on the way to a 79 (+8) in the afternoon.
Tyler Young started his opening round with a stretch of five-straight pars while converting a pair of birdies on the second and fifth in his first round 75 (+4). Young struggled early in the second round with five bogies and a double bogey on his opening nine. He was able to pick up a birdie on the second to offset his round of 80 (+9).
In team scoring, Kennesaw State posted a one-under 567 to hold a slim one shot lead over Wake Forest who posted an even par 568 on Saturday.
