Men's Golf Begins Home Weekend at Irish Creek Saturday

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Charlotte 49ers men’s golf team will host the annual Cabarrus County Irish Creek Collegiate this Saturday and Sunday at The Club at Irish Creek in Kannapolis. Charlotte, co-hosting the event with Davidson, will welcome a 16-team field featuring 90 competitors.

“It’s always good to play close to home,” stated Head Coach Ryan Cabbage. “Irish Creek is in fantastic condition right now. The wind is going to blow a little bit on Saturday, but it should be a great weekend against a very good field that’s coming in.”

The Club at Irish Creek will play to a par 71 measuring 7,099 yards. Charlotte finished fifth in last year’s event in Kannapolis. Seth Gandy, Tyler Young, Nicolas Manifacier, Victor Wiggins and Thomas Rowland will be the five-man field keeping in their lone “home” event of the season. This weekend also marks the final tune-up before the Conference USA tournament at the end of the month in Arkansas.

Gandy led the Niners last weekend in the Aggie Invitational with consistent rounds of 75-74-75 to shoot 224 (+8). Young came in at the second spot after rounds of 76-79-77 while Manifacier put together three rounds of 78-81-74. Wiggins (79-74-82) and Rowland (78-80-78) both had a tough time at the Traditions Club in Texas last weekend.

With breathtaking views, Irish Creek pays tribute to the past where walking was part of the game. Irish Creek is set into challenging, rolling terrain that encircles a pristine 400-acre lake. Love’s design also takes full advantage of the surrounding forest, the natural contours, and the ever-present lakefront which is visible from 16 of the 18 holes. Love’s goal was to challenge skilled players from tee to green while creating a course everyone wanted to play repeatedly.

The Club at Irish Creek, rated #5 in the Greater Charlotte region and #38 in North Carolina, has played host to not only this annual event, but several other top tournaments such as the PGA Tour’s Q-School Qualifying and the CPGA Toshiba/EMC North Carolina open. In 2008, Irish Creek was rated the ninth-best new course in America and came in at #30 for having the Best Residential Course in America, both by Golfweek.

Akron, App. State, Dartmouth, East Carolina, Florida State, James Madison, Kennesaw State, Mercer, North Carolina, North Florida, UNCG, UNCW, VCU and Wake Forest will comprise the other 14 teams in the event.

All players will engage in 36 holes of action on Saturday before playing a final 18 on Sunday. Both days will feature shotgun starts. Charlotte will start on the back nine Saturday paired with Kennesaw State and Florida State beginning at 8:30 a.m. Both day are free and open to the public. For those who can’t make it out to Irish Creek, live scoring will be available through http://www.charlotte49ers.com.
