CHARLOTTE, N.C. –The Charlotte 49ers men’s golf team is set to co-host the Cabarrus County Irish Creek Collegiate this Saturday and Sunday at The Club at Irish Creek in Kannapolis. The Davis Love III designed course will host some of the best teams in the country in the 16-team field with 54 holes of action to take place.
Charlotte, along with co-host Davidson, will welcome nationally-ranked opponents in #7 Florida State, #10 Wake Forest and #24 North Carolina. North Florida, Kennesaw State, James Madison, Appalachian State, VCU, Mercer, UNCG, UNCW, East Carolina, Dartmouth and Akron will also make up the entire field.
With breathtaking views, Irish Creek pays tribute to the past where walking was part of the game. Irish Creek is set into challenging, rolling terrain that encircles a pristine 400-acre lake. Love’s design also takes full advantage of the surrounding forest, the natural contours, and the ever-present lakefront which is visible from 16 of the 18 holes. Love’s goal was to challenge skilled players from tee to green while creating a course everyone wanted to play repeatedly.
The Club at Irish Creek, rated #5 in the Greater Charlotte region and #38 in North Carolina, has played host to not only this annual event, but several other top tournaments such as the PGA Tour’s Q-School Qualifying and the CPGA Toshiba/EMC North Carolina open. In 2008, Irish Creek was rated the ninth-best new course in America and came in at #30 for having the Best Residential Course in America, both by Golfweek.
Action in the 54-hole event will start with 36 holes of continuous action starting with a shotgun start Saturday morning while teams will be grouped into traditional tee times for the final 18 holes on Sunday.
All of the weekend action has free admission and is open to the public. For those who can’t make it, live scoring for all three rounds will also be available through http://www.charlotte49ers.com.
