The Charlotte 49ers football program will open its 2016 spring season with the first spring practice on Saturday, Mar. 19. The spring season will conclude with the annual Green-White Spring Game, April 23 at 7 p.m. This fall, the 49ers will begin their second season in the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) as a member of Conference USA.
Head coach Brad Lambert returns 17 starters (9 on offense; 8 on defense) and 54 letterwinners from the 2015 season, which was the 49ers first at the FBS level.
Among the returners are second team all-Conference USA selections Larry Ogunjobi and Kalif Phillips. Defensive lineman Ogunjobi, the 49ers all-time leader in tackles, tackles for loss and sacks, has started all 34 games in the program’s three-year history. Phillips, the 49ers standout running back, has accumulated over 3,000 career rushing yards and was fifth in C-USA last year with 961 rushing yards.
Of note, the 2016 season will be the final year for the 49ers’ first class. There are 21 players on the roster that helped make up the 49ers’ first team, which practiced throughout the 2012 season in preparation for the 49ers' inaugural season in 2013.
