Following Charlotte baseball's monster weekend on the diamond, junior third baseman Shane Basen (Waxhaw, N.C. / Marvin Ridge HS) and freshman outfielder Brad Elwood (Indian Trail, N.C. / Piedmont HS) were named Atlantic 10 Conference Player and Rookie of the Week, respectively.
Charlotte outscored George Washington 32-10 in the three-game A-10 sweep on the road over the weekend, including a season-high 15 runs and 20 hits on Sunday. The 32 runs were the most for Charlotte in a weekend this season and pull the record to 20-23 overall, 8-9 in conference play. The sweep finished off Charlotte's league road record at 7-5, with two home weekends to go.
Basen drove in 12 runs in the three-game series, capping his weekend off with four hits and five RBI to tie career highs in both categories on Sunday. He finished the series with a .667 (8-for-12) mark, scoring two runs and collecting at least two hits in each of the three games of the weekend series. He also had one hit in both of the midweek games, at home against Duke Tuesday and at No. 19 North Carolina State Wednesday. In the GW series, he led all players with 18 assists and did not commit an error. For the week, he had 22 assists and a perfect fielding percentage. He also had four multiple base hits, drew three walks and did not strike out in the five games. For the season, Basen leads the Atlantic 10 Conference with five triples and is among the league leaders with a team-leading 40 RBI and is second on the squad with a .333 batting average.
Elwood returned to form this week after missing a month and a half with an injury. In just his fourth game back from the extended absence, he set a new career high with three hits in four at-bats at No. 19 North Carolina State on April 25, with a double and a run scored before tying that mark with three more hits in the 49ers Atlantic 10 Conference contest at George Washington on April 28, a perfect 3-for-3 day, which included another double as part of the weekend sweep of the Colonials. Elwood leads Charlotte's freshmen with a .304 average and became only the fourth 49er with two outfield assists in one game since the team joined the league in 2006 a week ago against Saint Joseph's. His six season doubles are fifth on the team, while his two season triples are tied for third on the team, despite just 21 games played this season.
These are Charlotte's fifth and sixth weekly awards this season, and the second for both players. Basen was the first Player of the Week in the league on February 20, after an 8-for-13 starting week. Elwood was named Rookie of the Week two weeks later on March 5, after six hits, five RBI and a pair of stolen bases in a four-game weekend series against Wagner.
This week, exams play a part in the game scheduling for the 49ers. Charlotte has its conference bye weekend, filling that void with a three-game series at Georgia Tech, with a Saturday night 7 p.m. game and a 2 p.m. Sunday doubleheader.
