Senior Rafael Guerrero and freshman Raoul Menard led the 49ers into sixth place after the first two rounds of Iowa's 11-team Hawkeye Great River Entertainment Invitational, Saturday.
Charlotte is six-over par, 582, heading into Sunday's third and final round. Charlotte is three strokes behind fifth-place Minnesota and four stokes behind fourth-place Washington State. Iowa holds a six-stroke second round lead at 20-under par. Iowa State in second at at 14-under par.
Guerrero (72-74) and Menard (72-74) shot identical two-over par 146s to lead the 49ers and tie for 23rd overall. Senior Olafur Loftsson rallied from three-over par 75 in the first round to shoot even par in round two. He and Tyler Mitchell (73-74) are tied for 31st at three-over par 147. Senior Paul Ferrier added a four-over par 148 (71-77).
"We did some good things," said 49ers head coach Ryan Cabbage. "We're looking forward to geting out there tomorrow and going low and passing by some teams in front of us."
Guerrero placed sixth in the event, last year.
