MORAGA, Calif. - The Saint Mary's baseball team begins its final home stand of the 2012 season hosting UC Davis for the first of four games in Moraga this week. The Gaels and Aggies will square off on Tuesday at 3:00 p.m. at Louis Guisto Field. The game against the Aggies will mark the final non-conference game of the season for SMC who has gone 16-12 against non-conference foes this year.
After taking last week off for finals and graduation, the Gaels enter this week with an overall record of 23-26 after losing two of three to host Portland two weeks ago. Saint Mary's is currently hitting .257 as a team which is seventh in the West Coast Conference. SMC is averaging 4.29 runs per game, leading the team is freshman first baseman Collin Ferguson who boasts a .329 average, with 16 doubles.
On the mound, the Gaels boast a 3.28 staff ERA, which is currently on pace to set a new team record for ERA in a single season, the current record is 3.37 was set last season. In 2012, the Gaels pitchers have allowed just 159 earned runs in 435.2 innings this season. Taking the ball for the Gaels on Tuesday will be sophomore left hand pitcher Ben Griset.
In Griset's last start he went 6.0 plus innings, scattering six hits, one earned run, with a walk and five strike outs, receiving the no decision against Sacramento State on May 8. He allowed just three hits over six innings; he started the seventh but was lifted after giving up three-straight hits. For the year, Griset is 2-6 with a 4.37 ERA, in 14 appearances and 10 starts he has thrown a career-high 59.2 innings, tallying 52 strike outs to just 25 walks, the 52 strike outs is also a career-best and is third on the team.
First year head coach Matt Vaughn has the Aggies entering Tuesday's contest with an overall record of 24-29 after taking two of three from Cal State Northridge on the road. The Aggies are hitting .275 as a team, averaging 4.4 runs per game. Leading the team at the dish is third baseman Paul Politi, who is hitting .333 with 72 hits and a team-leading 29 RBI in 53 games played.
On the mound, the Aggies have a staff ERA of 4.21, in 474.2 innings pitched, UCD has allowed 222 earned runs, with 324 strike outs to 150 walks, and opponents are hitting .270 against the Aggies. UC Davis will start with RHP Evan Wolf who is 2-4 with a 6.42 ERA.
Tuesday's contest will mark the 62nd time these two teams have matched up, with the Gaels owning a 33-27-1 advantage in the series, which began in 1972. Earlier this year, SMC defeated the Aggies 5-2 at Dobbins Stadium on March 19.
