MORAGA, Calif. - The Saint Mary's baseball team fresh of a 2-2 record last weekend with a series victory over Santa Clara looks to continue its winning ways against WCC foes, as the Gaels host Gonzaga for a three-game series starting Friday at 3:00 p.m. at Louis Guisto Field.
Saint Mary's (21-21/5-10 WCC) enters this weekend having won three of their last five, including a series victory on the road over Santa Clara last weekend. As a team, the Gaels are hitting .261, and averaging 4.40 runs per game. The .261 average ranks fifth in the conference.
Heating up for the Gaels is WCC Player of the Week, Brenden Kalfus. For the month of April, Kalfus hit .361 with 22 hits in 61 at bats with 11 runs scored, four doubles, two home runs and 15 runs batted in. For the year, Kalfus is hitting .253 with 37 hits in 145 at bats, six doubles, a triple two home runs and 20 runs batted in. Against Santa Clara Kalfus was a force, hitting back in the cleanup spot for the Gaels he finished the weekend going 8-for-12. He started off the series going 4-for-5 reaching base safely all five at bats, he scored four runs and drove in a run. In the second game of the series he went 3-for-4. He finished up the Santa Clara series going 1-for-3 with an RBI double in the top of the ninth inning.
On the mound, the Gaels continue to be one of the best pitching teams in the country. Saint Mary's currently ranks 34th in the country with a 3.15 team ERA. The Gaels have allowed 131 earned runs in 374.1 innings. More impressively the Gaels own a 1.92 K/BB ratio. Saturday's starter Kyle Barraclough had an impressive start against the Broncos last weekend, going 8.0 complete innings to earn his second win of the season and 18th of his career. The 18 wins ties him for fifth all-time at Saint Mary's.
Gonzaga enters this weekend with an overall record of 27-16 and are 7-8 in the WCC. After starting the season 10-0, the Bulldogs are really scuffling right now, having lost seven of their last eight games including a pair of mid-week games to No. 10 Oregon. At the plate, Gonzaga is hitting .297, and averaging 5.30 runs per game. Leading the team is senior outfielder Royce Bolinger who is hitting .392 with 36 runs scored, 71 hits, 10 doubles, two triples and nine home runs, with 34 RBI.
On the mound, the Bulldogs will be sending WCC Pitcher of the Week Marco Gonzalez on Saturday, last weekend he went 10 innings while striking out 15. On the year he is 5-1 with a 1.35 ERA, he also is hitting .327 on the year. Tyler Olson will go for Gonzaga on Friday, he is 4-1 with a 2.39 ERA, while Andy Hunter takes the mound on Sunday, boasting a 3-2 record with a 3.07 ERA.
All this weekend, the Gaels will be teaming up with the West Coast Conference for Pitch in For Baseball, there will be bins at the entrance to Louis Guisto Field where fans can donate new or used baseball gear and equipment. Donations will be sent to programs in need all over the world. Little League Day is also this weekend. On Sunday, May 6, kids 12 and under in their Little League uniforms will receive $1 off their ticket. After the game, they will get to run the bases and get autographs from the Gaels.
