WILMINGTON, North Carolina - Senior Sofia Hagsund and sophomore Jeanne Metivier have been named to the National Golf Coaches Association's All-American Scholar Team.

Hagsund and Metivier are among 585 women's collegiate golfers at the Division I, II and III levels to be recognized with the prestigious honor. The criteria for selection to the NGCA All-American Scholar Team are some of the most stringent in all of college athletics as recipients must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.50 and appear in at least half of a team's regular season events.

"It's a tremendous achievement by both Sofia and Jeanne," said UNCW Head Coach Cindy Ho, the 2012 CAA Coach-of-the-Year. "Both work extremely hard in the classroom and in their sport. They continue the tradition of academic excellence expected of the women's golf team. I am very proud of both of them."

The NGCA All-American Scholar Team is the second academic honor for the program in as many months. The squad received a Public Recognition Award from the NCAA in June for the third consecutive year for placing among the top 10 percent nationally for its work in the classroom.

Only the fifth player in the program's history to earn the distinction in each year of her career, Hagsund fashioned a team-low 75.94 stroke average in 11 events during the 2011-12 season to power the Seahawks to their second Colonial Athletic Association crown and NCAA Regional appearance. Hagsund was recognized as a First-Team All-CAA honoree for the third consecutive season, becoming just the fifth player in league history to earn all-league distinction on three occasions. A native of Landskrona, Sweden, Hagsund graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration in May.

"Sofia is only the seventh student-athlete in the history of the UNCW women's golf program to earn All-American Scholar status every year they were eligible and the fifth to earn this distinction all four years since the NGCA began to recognize freshmen in 2002," said Ho. "She joins a distinguished list of four former student-athletes who have achieved academic and athletic excellence by earning both All-American Scholar Team status and all-conference honors for three years."

A native of Arcachon, France, Metivier earned All-American Scholar Team recognition for the first time in her career after posting an 80.60 stroke average in 10 events last season. She carded a season-low 73 in the first round of the 2012 Pinehurst Spring Challenge in March and recorded her best finish of season at the CAA Championships with a tie for 36th place.

"Jeanne has had the highest grade point average on the team for two years, but is a first-time recipient of this award due to her improved play," said Ho. "If she continues her progress on the golf course, she can achieve this honor again in her career.  She is a dedicated athlete who is committed in her goal of scholastic achievement."
