About UNCW Athletics

The university holds Division I membership in the National Collegiate Athletic Association, Colonial Athletic Association, and Eastern College Athletic Conference. Varsity intercollegiate teams are fielded for men in basketball, cross country, baseball, golf, soccer, tennis, swimming and diving, and indoor/outdoor track and field. Varsity intercollegiate teams for women are fielded in basketball, cross country, softball, golf, soccer, tennis, swimming and diving, volleyball, and indoor/outdoor track and field.

Overview of the internship program

During the fall and spring semesters and summer sessions, the UNCW Department of Athletics has openings for interns with educational experiences or backgrounds in sport management, communications, business, marketing, and other related majors. These internships provide on-the-job learning experiences for undergraduate, graduate, or recently graduated students who express an interest in pursuing a career in the administration of intercollegiate athletics.  The UNCW Department of Athletics is committed to offering valuable internship experiences in a variety of departmental areas. Our interns over the past few years have served as tremendous resources for the Department of Athletics’ overall success. The internships provide individuals with an invaluable experience that will benefit them in their pursuit of a career in intercollegiate athletics. UNCW seeks individuals who exhibit strong leadership skills, academic excellence and a demonstrated interest in intercollegiate athletics.

Internship Programs

There are three types of internships available within our department:  volunteer, academic, and compensatory.  The number and types of internships available will be based on the needs of the department.

Descriptions of these internships are below:

Volunteer--Individuals who have a desire to gain work experience within athletic administration. These interns will receive no monetary compensation for these positions.

Academic--Individuals participate in the academic internship program in order to meet academic requirements of their degree while gaining experience in their chosen field. These interns will receive no monetary compensation for these positions.  Please contact the Assistant Athletic Director for Academics at for further information.

Compensatory--Individuals accepted in this internship program are given a monthly stipend while gaining experience in their chosen field. These individuals may work part-time or full-time and the length of the internship can vary from 6 months to 12 months. The availability of compensatory internships will be determined as funds are available.

Individuals who have participated in the volunteer and academic internships will be considered first for the compensatory internships rewarding those individuals for their commitment to our department.

Assignments available 

Listed below are the available areas for internships:


Academic Support- assist in academic counseling for student-athletes; assist with the coordination and monitoring of the study hall program; assist with various NCAA CHAMPS/Life Skills activities; assist with community outreach.


Administration- assist in the operations of the Department of Athletics under the supervision of the Director of Athletics


Athletic Training-assist in the operations of the Athletic Training Room; must be nationally certified and state licensed to qualify.


Business Management/Operationsassist in many areas of the Athletic Department as it pertains to business operations; must be a Business Major with an emphasis in Accounting and/or Sports Business Management; must have a proficient knowledge of computer skills and a familiarity of Athletic organizations.


Communications- provide hands-on experience in print, electronic and internet media as well as other aspects of the athletic department's sports information operation; must have a strong familiarity with sports; must have an ability to write well and have proficiency in Microsoft Word, PhotoShop and Desktop Publishing.


Compliance- assist with the department’s monitoring of NCAA, CAA, and institutional rules and regulations; review compliance documentation and forms and prepare compliance newsletters and educational literature, assist with the compliance website; utilize compliance assistant software.


Development-assist in many areas of the booster club and fundraising organization, including but not limited to: cultivation and fundraising events; hospitality functions in conjunction with athletic contests; annual campaign communications; solicitation, follow-up and thank you mailings; general office duties and customer service responsibilities; other duties as assigned.


Event Management and Facilities-assist in providing event management for home athletic contests and maintaining athletic facilities.


Marketing and Promotions-assist with the marketing, promotion and game-day operations for Seahawk Athletics.


Strength and Conditioning- assist in  the strength center; demonstrate and apply safe and effective exercise techniques for team workouts; assist with agility and plyometric workouts; assist with cleaning and maintaining the equipment and the facility.


Ticket Operations-assist in the ticket office operations including but not limited to: providing outstanding customer service on phone and in person during daily ticket office staffing; assisting in the sale of individual and season tickets; following up on sales leads; make cold calls to generate season, group and individual sales; staffing ticket office at home athletic events; other duties as assigned.


Permanent Employment

The internship program is designed to facilitate a hands-on learning and work experience. It provides an opportunity for individuals to develop skills necessary to enter the job market. UNCW is under no obligation to offer full time employment to participating individuals after the completion of the internship. Likewise, individuals are under no obligation to UNCW after completion of the work period.
