CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - The Penn women's rowing team completed first-day action at the University of Virginia's UVA Invitational.
On Saturday morning, the Quakers faced off against Ivy rival Cornell in the latest installment of the Class of '89 Plaque. The Big Red retained the Plaque for a third straight year, sweeping all five races.
In the varsity 8, Cornell's time of 6:30.6 was just ahead of Penn (6:34.9), while in the second varsity 8 the Big Red clocked 6:44.0 to finish more than seven seconds ahead of the Quakers (6:51.6). In the varsity 4, Cornell covered the 2,000-meter course in 7:29.3, well ahead of Penn (7:41.7). Cornell also won the second varsity 4 and novice 8 races by almost 13 seconds apiece.
In the afternoon, Penn met a pair of Big Ten challengers in 15th-ranked Michigan State and No. 19 Minnesota.
In the varsity 8 race, MSU clocked 6:30.2 over the 2,000-meter course while Penn was second (6:35.5) and Minnesota was third (6:38.8). The Spartans also won the second varsity 8, in 6:46.2, ahead of the Gophers (6:48.0) and Quakers (6:55.1).
Minnesota was winner of the varsity 4, in 7:28.1, while Penn nipped MSU for second place, 7:31.2 to 7:31.7. Michigan State easily won the second varsity 4 race, clocking 7:44.3 to Minnesota's 7:52.6 and Penn's 7:58.9. In the third varsity 8 race, Minnesota took first in 7:10.8 while Michigan State was second (7:14.4) and Penn was third (7:23.2).
Penn will conclude racing on Sunday, taking on Notre Dame and San Diego. Please note, times have changed for Sunday's races.
