Race Course Info

PHILADELPHIA - Its off to New York City for the University of Pennsylvania lightweights where they will race No. 2 Yale and No. 7 Columbia for the Dodge Cup on Saturday at the Orchard Beach Lagoon.

The second freshman fours will get the regatta started at 9 a.m. They will be followed by the first freshman at 9:15 a.m., and the second varsity boats will race a half hour later. The Dodge Cup will be up for grabs when the varsity 8's line up at 10:15 a.m. The day will conclude for the lightweights with the third varsity race at 10:45 a.m.

If you are unable to make it to support the lightweights in person, you can listen to the Columbia broadcast of the races at either 212-381-9645 or http://client.stretchinternet.com/client/columbiau.portal#.

This will be the 53rd Dodge Cup race. Yale has brought home the cup on 33 occasions, including each of the last eight years. Penn has won this race 15 times, but the last Quakers victory was in 1992 on the Schuylkill River. Columbia has finished first in this race just four times.

Last year, in sub-par weather conditions, Penn placed third behind Yale and Columbia on the Housatonic River in Derby, Conn. All but two of the races were cancelled due to swamping. The cup races were moved to the start of the morning and the varsity crews rowed into a headwind. The Bulldogs earned an open water lead, but the Lions and Quakers were in a tight battle for second. Eventually the Lions pulled away to earn the runner-up position. Yale won with a time of 6:21.6, while Columbia finished at 6:30.6 and the Quakers finished the course in 6:38.5.

No. 9 Penn looks to rebound from a third-place finish last week in Ithaca, N.Y. Against two of the top five teams in the nation, Penn fell short of reclaiming the Matthews-Leonard Cups when the varsity finished behind No. 5 Cornell and No. 1 Harvard at the Cayuga Inlet. The Crimson won with a time of 6:02.8. On their home course, Cornell was also able to put open water between the Quakers, who finished at 6:21.9.
