DALLAS, Texas – Four University of North Dakota incoming freshmen were selected in the 2018 National Hockey League Entry Draft, including a pair of rookie defenseman taken in the first two rounds by the Ottawa Senators.
Ottawa drafted Jacob Bernard-Docker on Friday in the first round, 26th overall, then followed up by taking fellow rearguard Jonny Tychonick 48th overall in the second round on Saturday.
Bernard-Docker, a native of Canmore, Alberta, was named the Canadian Junior Hockey League’s (CJHL) top defenseman in 2017-18 after collecting 20 goals and 21 assists in 49 games for the Alberta Junior Hockey League’s Okotoks Oilers. He became North Dakota’s 20th first-round draft pick in program history, and its 15th since 2000.
Tychonick, who hails from Calgary, Alberta, was named to the British Columbia Hockey League (BCHL) All-Star First Team last season after ranking third among the league’s defensemen with 47 points (9 goals, 38 assists) in 48 games. Bernard-Docker and Tychonick were teammates when they represented Canada at the 2018 World Junior A Challenge.
The San Jose Sharks traded up in the fourth round to draft forward Jasper Weatherby, who was the BCHL’s Most Valuable Player and a first-team all-star in 2017-18 with the Wenatchee Wild. The 6-foot-3, 215-pounder led the league in scoring during both the regular season (58 GP, 37-37—74) and playoffs (20 GP, 15-23—38). Weatherby took the Wild to a league championship and a berth in the RBC Cup semifinals, where he was named the tournament’s top forward after scoring three goals and five assists in five games.
UND’s fourth draft pick was forward Gavin Hain, who was selected by Dave Hakstol’s Philadelphia Flyers in the sixth round (174th overall). A native of Grand Rapids, Minn., Hain spent the 2017-18 season with the U.S. National Team Development Program (NTDP) and registered 11 goals and 20 assists in 53 games. The 6-foot, 196-pounder won a silver medal at the 2017-18 Under-18 World Championship. In 2016-17, Hain captained Grand Rapids High School to a Class 2A state championship.
