CORVALLIS, Ore.-- North Dakota put a huge scare into 17th-ranked Oregon State before the Beavers hung on for a 65-55 win in the regular season opener for both teams. The Fighting Hawks out-rebounded the bigger Beavers, 42-39, and was within a possession until the closing minutes of the ballgame.

Junior transfer Melissa Dailey set the pace for the Hawks, scoring 15. Lexi Klabo added 12 points (8-for-8 FTs) while Jill Morton added 10 points and a career-high seven rebounds.

"The intensity from our leadership and from our team showed that we've improved from our last exhibition game," UND head coach Travis Brewster said. "Tough place to play, and a very-well coached team but I'm excited to see where our team goes from here."

Dailey got UND rolling early as she took the opening tip up the floor and tripled to give the Fighting Hawks the early advantage. UND led for most of the first quarter until the Beavers rallied and claimed an 18-12 edge at the end of the first frame.

In the second, UND again started well, scoring the first seven points of the quarter, part of a 17-6 run for the visitors as the Hawks re-claimed a five-point lead. It would be tied at the half, 29-29, with the crowd of 3,737 quieting with each UND run.

In the third, though, Oregon State scored 14 of the first 19 points to wrestle away control. North Dakota never relented, however, with a huge three from Akealy Moton and a pair of big triples from Bailey Strand whittled the lead down to a single point.

UND got it back to a one-point game two more times in the fourth quarter, but Oregon State held its ground and was able to hang on for the 65-55 win.

North Dakota (0-1) continues its tough road schedule, heading to another NCAA Tournament team at South Dakota State Wednesday. Tip is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. from Frost Arena.

Notes: Oregon State was 31-5 last season and ended the year 6th in the national RPI ... Five players made their UND debuts: Melissa Dailey, Mikayla Reinke, Akealy Moton, Julia Fleecs and Melissa Leet.
