Why do we coach?
We are here for the student athletes. Our mission is to make a positive lifelong difference in young people’s lives, giving each athlete the opportunity to live out their dream of being a collegiate athlete and becoming the person they are uniquely created to be.
How do we coach?
We create and cultivate an environment where there are no outside distractions, such as AirPods, cell phones and other technology. An environment where we all have one common goal to serve each other and grow together through the scientifically designed and time tested training protocol. Humbly and unselfishly serving each athlete, we will treat them as we would like to be treated using tough love, patience, kindness while teaching compassion, competitiveness, corporation, discipline, dedication, mercy and teamwork. Those are qualities that will last the test of time and continue to be relevant in the world around us, allowing each athlete to be successful not in only athletics but also in life.
Our Philosophy is a ground based technique oriented; explosive, Olympic style training philosophy consisting of year-round training designed to improve all aspects of physical and mental development of each athlete. The training cycles consist of different phases, which follows sound fundamental training principles and periodization. These are all encompassing sport specific macro-cycles, meso-cycles, and micro-cycles, which will allow each athlete the best opportunity for reaching maximum genetic potential. Our goal is to improve the strength, speed, agility, balance, and coordination of the athletes. We will further develop proprioception, kinesthetic awareness, eye-hand and eye-foot coordination. We will be focusing on injury prevention, flexibility, and overall power of the athletes trained. This will enable each athlete to have the skills and tools necessary to achieve success.
We motivate, coach, and inspire athletes to be consistent, disciplined, and to put forth a great effort EVERY DAY and BEST is our standard.
In addition to great instruction from the strength development staff, the Hornets have one of the country's premier weight rooms. The addition of the Memorial Hall gym & strength and conditioning center encompasses high ceilings, 10,000 square feet of training space with over 30,000 lbs. of free weights, 18 training stations, a full line of variable resistance machines, offices and a Gatorade fueling station.
It's cardio-vascular equipment features include Woodway treadmills, stationary bikes, and elliptical machines. The weight room is also equipped with state-of-the-art speed development and plyometric equipment (including: medicine balls, boxes, resistance bands, bungee cords, ladders, etc.), a bombing sound system.
The room is located next to the training room, equipment room, the stadium and connects directly to the Memorial Hall basketball area, facilitating convenient access for all athletes.
The Delaware State University department of Strength & Conditioning is accepting applications for administrative Interns. Responsibilities include: Assisting with the supervision and training of DSU’s 18 Division1 intercollegiate athletic programs including Football; Assisting with daily administrative and maintenance items; Completion of various educational assignments during the internship. Qualifications include: Strong work ethic; Punctuality; Enthusiasm; Desire to further one’s career in the field of Strength & Conditioning. Preferred qualifications include: Pursuing Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Physical Education, Exercise Science or related field; NSCA-CSCS, CSCCa-SCCC, or USAW certifications; CPR certification and coaching experience. Individuals chosen are subject to university background checks and standard hiring procedures. This position will allow the opportunity to receive experience working with all DSU’s Division 1 programs, work under a staff of seasoned NSCA-CSCS, CSCCa-SCCC, USAW certified coaches, better understand program design, have the potential to earn recommendations for future career opportunities, and receive college credit if applicable.
