MIAMI (April 28, 2012) - Sophomore Michael Ellis did exactly what the Panthers needed him to do on the mound, going deep into the game and saving an overworked FIU (25-17, 11-9 Sun Belt) bullpen in a 6-4 win over the South Alabama Jaguars (17-26, 11-9 SBC) on Saturday, April 28.

Ellis was magnificent for the Panthers, giving up two runs on seven hits in seven innings pitched for his second win of the season. A night after giving up a walk-off home run, Michael Gomez pitched a scoreless ninth inning for his 11th save of the season. Tyler James Shantz led the FIU offense with two hits and two RBI.

The Panthers struck first in the top of the third when Nathan Burns doubled home Pablo Bermudez who reach first on a base-on-balls to lead off the inning. Mike Martinez made it a 2-0 FIU advantage after doubling in Burns two batters later.

Bermudez added to the Panthers' lead with an RBI single, scoring Aramis Garcia in the fourth.

After the Jaguars picked up a run in the fourth, the Panthers answered in the fifth with a Shantz two-RBI single to take a 4-1 lead. The scoring continued in the seventh when Shantz doubled in Burns for FIU's fifth run of the game.

South Alabama cut the FIU lead to 5-4 in the eighth before the Panthers responded with an insurance run in the ninth. Adam Kirsch added some cushion on an RBI fielder's choice for a 6-4 FIU lead.
