FIU Unable to Get Past Columbia, 5-2

MIAMI (March 18, 2012) --- The FIU women's tennis team  (4-12) suffered its second-straight home loss, dropping a 5-2 decision to the Columbia Lions (7-3) on Sunday, March 18, at the FIU Tennis Courts.

Senior Lisa Johnson and sophomore Giulietta Boha registered FIU's two points in the match with pair of singles victories. Johnson defeated Bianca Sanon, 7-6 (2), 6-4 for her fourth singles victory of the season, while Boha picked up her third-straight singles win with a 6-2, 7-6 (9) victory over Katarina Kovacevic.

Columbia jumped out to a 1-0 lead after taking two of three doubles matches. FIU's lone victory in doubles play came when the duo of Johnson and Christine Seredni defeated Kovacevic and Crystal Leung, 8-4.

The Lions opened up singles play with two-straight victories to make the score 3-0 as Seredni lost to Leung, 6-2, 6-2, and freshman Nina Djordjevic suffered a 6-4, 6-0 loss to Tiana Takenaga. Boha got the Panthers on the board with her singles win, however, Columbia clinched the match following a 6-3, 6-4 loss by freshman Sarah McLean to Nicole Bartnik.

Freshman Karyn Guttormsen fell to Iani Alecsiu, 6-1, 7-6 (7), to make the score 5-1, and Johnson scored the Panthers' second point with her singles victory to close out the match, 5-2. 

The Panthers will next travel to Boca Raton, Fla., to face Florida Atlantic on Wednesday, March 21. The match is slated for 1:00 p.m.
