The top Keydet finisher of the day was freshman Renee Reives, who finished sixth in the shot put with a mark of 12.93 meters (42’5 ¼”), while Jenna Moye also scored, tallying two points in the 800-meter run with a seventh-place finish. Moye’s time was 2:22.28, and Thireyona Legg, Reives’ classmate, wrapped up the scoring efforts with an eighth-place finish in the 400-meter dash.
“I am proud of the effort of both of our teams, as well as the work they put in, but the overall result did not meet our goals,” said VMI head coach Darrin Webb. “We will finish up the indoor season well, and will get to work towards outdoor success. I know this team and our staff, and we will back at it on Monday, getting ready for our next championship.”
Overall, the Keydets finished with 26 team points, tied with Campbell for seventh place and two points ahead of ninth-place Radford. Winthrop brought up the rear with 23.5 points, while Liberty captured the title by defeating second-place Coastal Carolina, 187-174.5. Charleston Southern finished third, scoring 99 points, and Gardner-Webb (45), UNC Asheville (30) and High Point rounded out the team standings.
VMI track and field will be back in action March 3, as qualified Keydets compete at the IC4A/ECAC Championships, set to be held in Boston, Mass.
