NEW YORK – Senior Kyra Caldwell of the track & field team and Kyle Merber of the cross country/track & field squad were each presented the Connie S. Maniatty Outstanding Senior Student-athlete Awards to highlight the 91st edition of the Varsity C Celebration: Saluting our Student-athletes at Levien Gymnasium on Tuesday night.
A three-time Ivy League champion in the mile, indoor 3000m and outdoor 1500m, Merber also has been a member of two Ivy League championship distance medley relay teams and a 4x800 outdoor relay winning squad. In cross country, Merber is a two-time All-Ivy League runner and finished second overall at the 2011 Heptagonal meet in a snowstorm last October.

In 2009, Merber's eighth-place cross country finish helped the Lions to the Ivy League championship, a one-point victory over Princeton for Columbia's third Ivy League title in men's cross country. On the indoor oval, Merber set numerous records throughout his distinguished career, including the Ivy League record in the indoor mile. He ran two sub-four minute miles in his career and competed in the Wannamaker Mile at the 2012 Millrose Games at Madison Square Garden.

Kyra Caldwell has been one of the most decorated Columbia track athletes in recent history. A six-time individual Ivy League champion in the outdoor 100m hurdles, indoor 60m hurdles and outdoor 400m hurdles, Caldwell has been a member of two indoor 4x400m relay teams and two outdoor 4x400 relay teams that have captured Ivy League championships.

Named the Most Outstanding Competitor of the 2010 Ivy League Outdoor Heptagonals, Caldwell has shattered several Ivy League and Columbia records. She was the first Columbia athlete to ever win the title in the 100m hurdles in her first collegiate season and helped lead the Lions to the program's first Ivy League Heptagonal championship in indoor track & field this February.

The event, which honors all Columbia student-athletes, also featured the presentation of the Athletics Alumni Awards to David Barry '87CC, Michael Barry '89CC (wrestling) and Leslie Gittess Brodsky '88CC (women's tennis).

The watch award presentations for the Columbia senior student-athletes earning the highest cumulative grade-point averages and at least two varsity letters. Cindy Chen (volleyball) earned the Marion R. Philips Watch and Jesse Vella (men's soccer) earned the Dwight D. Eisenhower watch.
In addition, the fourth annual Lions Cup was awarded to the women's basketball team. A competitive event for all Columbia University varsity sports programs that is a means by which student-athletes can compete on behalf of their teams for points in various categories, the women's basketball team edged field hockey.
The men's squash team was awarded the Paul E. Fernandes Community Service Award, given to the varsity sports program achieving the most significant contributions and notable service to the University and local communities during an academic year.
