Massapequa Park, N.Y. - The Hofstra women's soccer team
played its first competitive game of the 2012 campaign, playing Fairleigh
Dickinson to a 1-1 tie in an exhibition contest at John J. Burns Park on
The Pride won an abbreviated penalty kick shootout, 3-2, against the Knights to capture the Town of Oyster Bay's Supervisor's Cup. No overtime periods were played before penalty kicks were used to determine the cup winner.
Sophomore Ingrid Moyer provided an early offense spark with a ninth-minute goal for Hofstra. Senior Nicki Choffel initiated the attack, sliding a crisp pass to Moyer inside the box, allowing the forward to blast a shot inside the right post for the early 1-0 lead.
Hofstra held the possession advantage, registering 13 shots compared to FDU's eight. But the Knights capitalized on the last of its four shots on-goal, tying the contest in the 69th minute when Kasey Schiavoni took a lobbed pass and raced almost 30 yards down field before sliding a shot to the far-left post for the equalizer.
The game officially ended in a draw before an abbreviated three-person shootout. Sophomores Caylin Dudley, Anya Koren and Sam Scolarici all scored on the penalty-kick attempts for Hofstra. Schiavoni and Rachel Hoekstra scored on FDU's opening two shots.
After Scolarici beat FDU goalkeeper Sage DoVale with a low-left side kick, Esther Rochon needed a goal to extend the shootout. But Hofstra junior goalkeeper Emily Morphitis, who entered the game in place of sophomore Lucy Gillet with 17:20 remaining, made a great diving save on a chest high shot to her right side to preserve the trophy for Hofstra.
Gillet finished with two saves and Morphitis one. DoVale ended her night with two saves for the Knights.
Hofstra also saw a glimpse of its freshmen class in their first experience of playing a Division I opponent. Leah Galton was one of the fastest players on the field, logging a shot as a reserve. Levittown native Jill Mulholland earned the start as a midfielder while Chloe Dale also saw game action.
The Pride will start the regular season on Friday at 7 p.m. against Ohio State from Hofstra Soccer Stadium.
